The life and spiritual wisdom of Saint Paisios the Athonite, modern elder and spiritual father

Modern Greece Monastic Wonderworker

Saint Paisios the Athonite

Saint Paisios the Athonite (1924-1994) stands as one of the most beloved and influential Orthodox saints of the modern era. His life of prayer, asceticism, and spiritual guidance, combined with his prophetic insights and miraculous healings, made him a beacon of Orthodox spirituality in the 20th century and continues to inspire countless Orthodox Christians worldwide.

Early Life and Calling

Paisios was born Arsenios Eznepidis on July 25, 1924, in Farasa, Cappadocia (modern-day Turkey), to pious Orthodox parents. His birth coincided with the feast of Saint Arsenios of Cappadocia, after whom he was named and who would later appear to him in visions.

Due to the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1924, his family was forced to leave their ancestral home when Arsenios was just 45 days old. They settled in Konitsa, northern Greece, where he grew up in poverty but rich in faith.

Youth and Military Service

From his youth, Arsenios showed signs of spiritual calling and unusual piety. He was known for his kindness to animals, his love of prayer, and his desire to help others, often giving away his own possessions to those in need.

During World War II and the Greek Civil War, he served as a radio operator in the Greek army. Even during military service, he maintained his spiritual practices and was known for his courage, selflessness, and care for his fellow soldiers.

Monastic Calling

After his military service, Arsenios felt increasingly called to monastic life. In 1950, he entered the Monastery of Esphigmenou on Mount Athos, where he was tonsured as a monk with the name Averkios. Later, he was given the name Paisios after Saint Paisios the Great.

His early years on Athos were marked by:

  • Intense ascetic practices and spiritual struggle
  • Obedience to his spiritual fathers
  • Manual labor in carpentry and other monastery work
  • Deep prayer life and mystical experiences

The Hermit Years

In 1958, Paisios left Athos temporarily to care for his aging parents and to serve at the Monastery of Stomion in Konitsa. After his parents’ death, he spent time at various monasteries, including Sinai, where he lived as a hermit in the desert.

His time in the Sinai desert (1962-1964) was particularly formative, as he experienced the harsh conditions of desert monasticism and deepened his spiritual life through solitude and prayer.

Return to Mount Athos

In 1967, Paisios returned to Mount Athos and eventually settled at the Hermitage of Panagouda, where he would spend the most productive years of his spiritual ministry. His cell became a place of pilgrimage for thousands seeking spiritual guidance, healing, and comfort.

Spiritual Gifts and Miracles

Saint Paisios was blessed with numerous spiritual gifts that testified to his sanctity:

Clairvoyance: He often knew the thoughts, problems, and spiritual states of his visitors before they spoke.

Prophecy: He made numerous prophecies about future events, many of which have been fulfilled.

Healing: Countless people were healed through his prayers and intercession, both during his lifetime and after his death.

Discernment of Spirits: He could distinguish between divine inspirations and demonic deceptions.

Visions: He had frequent visions of Christ, the Theotokos, and various saints.

The Spiritual Father

Paisios became one of the most sought-after spiritual fathers of his time. People from all walks of life—clergy and laity, rich and poor, educated and simple—came to him for guidance. His approach to spiritual direction was characterized by:

Unconditional Love: He received everyone with love and compassion, regardless of their spiritual state.

Practical Wisdom: His advice was always practical and adapted to each person’s circumstances and spiritual capacity.

Humor and Joy: Despite his ascetic life, he was known for his sense of humor and the joy he brought to others.

Prophetic Insight: He often provided guidance that proved prophetic, helping people navigate future challenges.

Teachings and Spiritual Wisdom

Saint Paisios’s teachings, preserved in numerous books compiled from his conversations, cover all aspects of Orthodox spiritual life:

On Prayer: “Prayer is the breath of the soul. Just as the body cannot live without breathing, so the soul cannot live without prayer.”

On Suffering: “God allows difficulties to come to us so that we might turn to Him and find our true strength in Him.”

On Love: “When we have love, we have everything. When we lack love, we lack everything.”

On Humility: “The humble person is like a sponge that absorbs all the good and squeezes out all the bad.”

Care for Others

Despite living as a hermit, Paisios was deeply concerned about the welfare of others. He would often:

  • Fast so that others might have food
  • Give away his possessions to those in need
  • Pray continuously for the salvation of souls
  • Offer practical help to visitors facing difficulties

His cell was always open to those seeking help, and he would receive visitors from early morning until late at night, often forgetting to eat or rest.

Illness and Suffering

In his later years, Paisios suffered from various illnesses, including a hernia that caused him great pain. He refused surgery for years, offering his suffering for the salvation of souls. When he finally agreed to surgery in 1993, doctors discovered advanced cancer.

He faced his illness with the same faith and joy that characterized his entire life, seeing it as an opportunity to unite his sufferings with those of Christ.

Death and Canonization

Saint Paisios died on July 12, 1994, at the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian in Souroti, near Thessaloniki, where he had gone for medical treatment. His death was mourned throughout the Orthodox world as the loss of a great spiritual father.

He was canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate on January 13, 2015, recognizing officially what the faithful had long known—that he was indeed a saint whose life and teachings continue to guide the Church.
