Saint Nectarios of Aegina (1846-1920) is one of the most beloved modern Orthodox saints, renowned for his humility, pastoral care, and miraculous healings that continue to this day. His life exemplifies Christian virtue in the face of persecution and demonstrates God’s power working through those who embrace radical humility.
Born Anastasios Kephalas on the island of Selymbria (modern Silivri, Turkey), he came from a poor family but showed exceptional intelligence and piety from childhood. Despite financial hardships, he pursued education with determination, often walking great distances to attend school.
His academic brilliance earned him a scholarship to study in Constantinople, where he excelled in theology and classical studies. He later continued his education in Athens, graduating with highest honors from the University of Athens.
In 1876, Anastasios entered the monastery of Nea Moni on the island of Chios, taking the monastic name Nectarios. His spiritual maturity and learning quickly became evident, and he was ordained to the priesthood in 1886.
His reputation for holiness and scholarship led to his appointment as preacher at the Church of Saint Nicholas in Cairo, Egypt, where he served the Greek Orthodox community with distinction.
In 1889, at the remarkably young age of 43, Nectarios was consecrated as Metropolitan of Pentapolis in Egypt by Patriarch Sophronios of Alexandria. As bishop, he demonstrated exceptional pastoral care:

In 1890, he was unjustly dismissed from his position and forced to leave Egypt. This devastating blow would have broken many men, but Saint Nectarios accepted it as God’s will, never speaking ill of his accusers or seeking vindication.
Returning to Greece as an unemployed bishop, Saint Nectarios faced poverty and rejection. Eventually, he was appointed as a preacher in Athens and later as director of the Rizarios Ecclesiastical School.
