The great prophet who led Israel out of Egypt and received the Law on Mount Sinai
Moses stands as one of the greatest prophets in salvation history, chosen by God to deliver the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and to receive the divine Law on Mount Sinai. His life spans the entire narrative of the Exodus, from his miraculous preservation as an infant to his leadership of God’s people through forty years in the wilderness.
Born during a time when Pharaoh ordered all Hebrew male infants killed, Moses was hidden by his mother and eventually adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter. Raised in the Egyptian court, he nevertheless identified with his Hebrew people. After killing an Egyptian who was beating a Hebrew slave, Moses fled to Midian, where he married and became a shepherd.
At the burning bush on Mount Horeb, God revealed Himself to Moses and commissioned him to return to Egypt to demand the release of the Israelites. Through Moses, God performed mighty signs and wonders, culminating in the ten plagues and the Passover, which led to Israel’s liberation.
Moses led the people through the Red Sea, which God parted miraculously. On Mount Sinai, he received the Ten Commandments and the Law, spending forty days in God’s presence. His face shone with divine glory when he descended from the mountain, requiring him to veil his face before the people.
Throughout the wilderness journey, Moses interceded for the people despite their repeated rebellions. He struck the rock to bring forth water, lifted up the bronze serpent for healing, and faithfully taught God’s commandments. Though he was not permitted to enter the Promised Land due to his own disobedience, he viewed it from Mount Nebo before his death.
The Orthodox Church honors Moses as a type of Christ—the great prophet, lawgiver, and mediator between God and His people. His meekness, faithfulness, and intimate communion with God make him a model for all who seek to serve the Lord. The Transfiguration of Christ, where Moses appeared alongside Elijah, confirms his enduring significance in God’s plan of salvation.
